Book, as we perceive it today, is a volume of many sheets of paper bound together, containing text, illustrations, photographs, or other kinds of information. Because they are relatively durable and portable, books have long been used to preserve and distribute information.
The forerunners of books were the hand-written books since centuries BC, including clay tablets, wood or bamboo tablets tied with cord. More closely, related to the modern book were the book rolls, or scrolls, of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. The first book known to have been printed on paper was a Chinese edition of the Buddhist text Jingangjing (Diamond Sutra), dating from AD 868.
I hadn't understood how days could be both long and short at the same time: long to live through, maybe, but so drawn out that they ended up flowing into one another. They lost their names. Only 'yesterday' and 'tomorrow' still had any meaning for me.
